We collect only what we need to run the Observatory, keep it secure, and let you see patterns across the community. This policy explains what that means in plain language.
Account data: email address, chosen username, display name, and optional profile photo.
Observations: the text, tags, category, timestamp, and optional location coordinates you attach to each observation.
Preferences: the choices you make in Settings, stored under your account so they sync across devices.
Device data: browser user-agent, viewport size, timezone, and connection status — used for troubleshooting and rendering the app correctly.
Location coordinates are collected only when you explicitly attach one to an observation or search nearby signals.
Coordinates are used to power the observatory map, distance filters, and "similar observations nearby" pattern detection. They are never sold.
We use privacy-preserving product analytics to understand which features are used and to find bugs. No third-party ad networks are embedded.
We use first-party cookies and browser local storage for authentication, theme, and preference caching. We do not set advertising cookies.
We share data only with service providers strictly necessary to run the app (hosting, database, email delivery). We never sell personal data.
Aggregate, anonymised patterns may be shown publicly — no single person can be identified from these aggregates.
Signed-in users can request a machine-readable export of their account, observations, and preferences by emailing hello@staystrange.app. We respond within 30 days.
Deleting your account permanently removes your profile, observations, and preferences. Some backups may retain the data for up to 30 days before final removal.
